Debit/Credit cards continued to be the preferred mode of online payments in the United States despite the recent increase in the popularity of digital payments. According to the numbers presented by NoKyc.com, from a recent survey, Debit Cards are the most popular mode for online payment in the United States, with 56% of survey respondents picking the option.

Digital payment services not as popular as cards, yet

According to the latest Customer Insights survey from data firm Statista, debit cards are the preferred method of online payment in the United States.

The survey, which was conducted during the 2023-24 financial year,  asked 10,062 respondents from the United States about their online shopping/payment habits. The respondents were all aged between 18 and 64. The survey allowed respondents to pick multiple options as answers.

As stated above, Debit Cards emerged as the most popular method of online payment in the United States, with 56% of respondents picking the option.

Credit Cards were the second most popular mode of online payments for US-based customers. 46% of those who were surveyed picked Credit Cards as an option.

Digital payment services such as Google Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Amazon Pay have become popular modes of online payment in recent years; in some markets/countries, even more than traditional methods such as card payments. However, in the United States, such digital payment options are yet to catch up with online card payments in popularity. Only 42% of the surveyed picked digital payment services as an option.

Direct debit was the next most popular option for online payments for US-based customers. However, it was far less popular tan the first three choices, with only 27% of votes. Prepaid cards/vouchers were next, having picked by just 16% of the survey base.

Cash on delivery was picked as an option by 15% of all surveyed, and Cash in advance was selected by 12%.

9% of the surveyed also picked invoices as an option for online payments, while a similar number said that they had never made an online payment before. 3% of the surveyed picked Other as an option.
