The Premier League has added another feather in its cap as it has been deemed the most popular league in Europe based on its match-going audience. According to the latest report from UEFA, the Premier League attracted the most fans to stadiums during the 2022-23 season.

The report states that a total of 15.3 million fans attended Premier League games last season. The Bundesliga was in the second spot, not far behind the Premier League, with 13.2 million stadium-going viewers. Now, it must be noted that the Bundesliga is an 18-team league, and thus, a regular Bundesliga season has 306 games as opposed to 380 games in a Premier League season.

Spain’s La Liga occupies the third spot, with 11.2 million fans attending the games in 2022-23. In the fourth spot, Italy’s Serie A matches La Liga’s numbers, which almost match those of La Liga, with 11.2 million fans going to watch the last Serie A season.

Ligue 1 finds itself at the lowest spot among the big five leagues. A total of 9 million fans attended games in the top tier of French football in 2022-23.

Outside of the big five, Netherlands’ Eredivisie attracted the most fans in 2022-23. A total of 5.7 million attended the games in the Dutch league last season. The next spot is taken by Turkey’s Super Lig, which is somewhat behind Eredivisie with just 3.9 million fans attending the games. However, the Scottish Premiership is close behind the Turkish League, with 3.8 million fans attending its games in 2022-23.

Portugal’s Primeira Liga normally stays in contention for the best league outside of the big five. However, it has some catching up to do when it comes to attracting fans to stadiums. The top tier of Portugal football is only ninth on the list, with a total of 3.6 million spectators in 2022-23.

Belgium’s Pro League occupies the tenth and the last spot on our list with 3.2 million fans attending games in 2022-23.
